Founded in 2017 in Vancouver, British Columbia by Dr. Előd Gyenge and Dr. Christina Gyenge, Agora Energy is developing novel carbon‑to‑electricity battery tech. Agora’s groundbreaking innovations have been globally recognized, earning the Keeling Curve Prize for Capture & Utilization in 2021 and they placed first in the Hello Tomorrow Global DeepTech Challenge, positioning Agora among the world leaders in energy storage and generation.

The Problem

Carbon emissions from industrial emitters are one of the primary drivers of climate change. At the same time, reducing carbon emissions by switching to cleaner forms of energy while upholding energy security is also a major challenge.

One of the most promising solutions to the first problem is carbon capture, utilization, and storage. The market for these technologies is already valued at over $3 billion – and it’s growing at a fast rate of about 12% every year. To address the second problem, grid-scale energy storage technologies are rapidly being developed and deployed. Likewise, this sector is one of the fastest-growing technology segments worldwide, with a yearly growth rate of 18% and an annual market size of $41 billion as of last year. However, these solutions often work independently of each other, limiting their impact and raising costs. Combining and scaling them could have a transformative impact on the planet and the lives of future generations.

The Solution

Developing a one-step CO2 capture and conversion process for clean electricity generation in fuel cells and batteries.

Agora Energy Technologies is developing a new technology that combines carbon capture and conversion in one unit to produce high-energy density chemicals and hydrogen, which can be utilized in fuel cells for electricity generation. Repurposing carbon waste to produce highly coveted electricity is a novel alternative approach to producing energy which also has the potential to be profitable for companies that deploy this solution.

How NorthX is helping: NorthX funding supports the design, build, and testing of a pilot-scale carbon capture and conversion system. Once scaled, this technology has the potential to decarbonize heavy carbon industrial emitters across the cement, steel, petrochemical, ammonia industries, and coal-fired power plants.

Such projects are capital-intensive, and the financial support from NorthX will enable Agora to accelerate commercial deployment.

“Our project has the ambitious goal of providing scalable solutions for decarbonizing heavy industrial sectors. Our novel one-step CO2 capture and conversion process has the potential to tip the balance of CO2 mitigation from a financial liability scenario to a profitable one. NorthX funding plays a significant role in the growth of the company and in accelerating a made in BC technology adoption.”
