Carbon capture utilization hub

Project Value: $5,300,000
Project Status: Active

The Problem

Cement manufacturing emits a substantial amount of carbon dioxide, with 70% of GHG emissions being unavoidable due to calcining. Currently, Amrize Canada’s sole net-zero solution is carbon capture. The company is exploring additional solutions to also enable carbon utilization.

The Solution

Amrize Canada, previously Lafarge Canada, is scaling carbon capture and utilization at cement plants.

As a part of its Carbon Capture Utilization Demonstration Hub, Amrize is implementing two utilization projects to the Richmond Cement Plant to transform CO₂ into energy dense liquid fuels and produce Ecoplanet, a lower carbon intensity cement. These are accomplished using technology from Dimensional Energy and the addition of supplementary cementitious materials.

NorthX is providing funding to support the trial of Dimensional Energy’s carbon-utilization technology at Amrize’s Richmond Cement Plant; energy dense syncrude, will be produced using CO₂ captured from industrial flue stacks using Svante’s solid sorbent carbon capture technology.

“This project is important because many industries all over the world are located in areas where onshore and offshore sequestration of CO₂ is not geologically feasible, allowable by government or socially accepted. Utilization of CO₂ is a solution, but is very expensive and the technology readiness level is low. With the help of NorthX and the government, industries will be able to take a chance to trial and demonstrate new upcoming technologies which may make a difference in decarbonizing industries around the world.”
