Wildfire prediction

The Problem

Electrical tracking on transmission line insulators is a high risk defect that causes fires on transmission lines. Currently there is no way to monitor this in real time, requiring Utilities to send crews out to do detailed inspections every 7-8 years. With no real-time situational awareness, Utilities can be living with high wildfire risk on their lines for years, unnoticed.

The Solution

Predicting wildfire risk with frequency and artificial intelligence on the most remote transmission lines.

CRWN.ai has developed technology aimed at enhancing wildfire prediction and prevention on transmission lines. The core technology, CRWN Condition Recognition Wireless Network, uses IoT devices, frequency and machine learning to identify high risk defects on transmission lines.

The NorthX funded project, CRWN.ai – Wildfire Prediction, expands on CRWN’s current capabilities of providing situational awareness for remote transmission lines, and adds a prediction element to it. This allows utilities to move from a reactive maintenance to a “just in time” maintenance approach, reducing their risk of starting wildfires.

“ The dream state for a Utility is to understand when failures will happen and why, especially when it comes to high risk defects that cause wildfires. It takes a ton of resourcing and money to manage maintenance on transmission lines, so ensuring the correct prioritization based on real time data is something that Utilities do not have. CRWN is currently providing situational awareness to Utilities but lacks an understanding of what actually leads up to these failures. NorthX’s funding will provide CRWN with the necessary lab time to run insulators to failures in different conditions, capturing the data along the way. After the project, wildfire prediction can be deployed to all devices on transmission lines, giving Utilities a longer line of sight to their potential failures. Actioning this data will increase uptime for the end customer and reduce the risk of a Utility caused wildfire due to lack of maintenance.”
