The Problem

From 2024-2035, it is estimated that 27.9 GW of storage will be needed in the US, UK, and Australia alone. The adoption of renewable energy and the accompanying need for utility scale grid projects is driving demand for battery storage systems that are efficient, stable and low-cost. Lithium batteries lack the long-term durability for mass adoption over the next 10 years.

The Solution

Invinity Energy Systems is scaling renewable energy storage technologies for utility grids worldwide.

Invinity Energy Systems has developed vanadium flow batteries at scale to meet the energy storage and charging load requirements for commercial, industrial, and utility-grade grid projects. Its VS3 battery is one of the largest flow batteries ever deployed.

This project will focus on scaling up the VS3 battery to a single module (75kW (300 kWh)), designed to operate in a string of four for grid-scale storage. Testing, integration, and optimization are core to the development of the new battery that will offer longer duration battery storage without the thermal runaway of lithium batteries. Diversification from lithium ion batteries to vanadium flow batteries will also help reduce the squeeze on resources and investment needed to meet lithium ion battery demand.
