Nova

The intelligence layer for wildfire operations.
Sector: Wildfire
Technology: Carbon Management
NorthX Backing: $600,000
Project Value: $1,200,000
Project Status: Active

Nova is a platform designed to integrate seamlessly into wildfire operations, turning aerial intelligence into clear, intuitive insights that commanders and crews can act on immediately. Nova delivers live infrared mapping, real-time fire perimeter tracking, hotspot identification and prioritization, and faster, safer decision-making for crews on the ground.

The Problem

Wildfires that reignite after being declared contained represent one of the highest risk and most costly failure modes in wildfire management. These events endanger fire crews, decision-makers, and communities — and frequently escalate into large secondary fires with severe environmental, economic, and social consequences.

The mop-up phase is already the longest and most resource-intensive stage of a fire’s lifecycle, yet reignitions still occur, exposing a critical gap: decisions during suppression, mop-up, and demobilization are routinely made on incomplete or delayed intelligence, leading to missed hotspots and preventable relights. The direct and indirect costs of wildfire — suppression, property loss, health impacts, and post-fire recovery — represent a significant and growing economic burden across North America, driven by increasingly severe fire seasons.

The opportunity is equally significant. Wildfire agencies across Canada and the US are actively investing in operational technology to address these gaps, and demand for real-time fire intelligence tools is growing alongside the scale and frequency of fire events. Nova is positioned to capture this demand by delivering the accurate, timely wildfire intelligence that agencies currently lack, at the moment it matters most.

The Solution

Turning infrared wildfire data into real-time intelligence for faster, more precise fire detection and response.

Nova is a wildfire intelligence platform that uses proprietary machine learning to automatically detect, geolocate, and operationalize hotspots from infrared imagery, converting raw thermal data into real-time actionable intelligence during active operations. Unlike traditional methods that rely on manual interpretation or post-flight processing, Nova enables fire agencies to identify residual heat with greater accuracy, make faster containment decisions, and allocate resources more effectively across the full wildfire lifecycle, directly reducing the risk of costly and dangerous relights.

NorthX investment advances Nova from proven operational deployments to a fully scalable, mission-ready platform through targeted hard technology investments: rapid map rendering, high-frequency data updates, and resilient field delivery across desktop and mobile. This work extends Nova’s compatibility across the full range of sensors and airborne platforms, including drones, helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft, and satellites, used by wildfire agencies today. The result is a measurable improvement in platform performance, reliability, and the speed at which critical fire intelligence reaches the people who need it most, supporting better operational outcomes across an expanding base of agency customers in both Canada and the US.

“NorthX backed us at a pivotal moment and we delivered. But there’s still a gap that needs closing. Right now, incident commanders are making life-and-death calls while manned aircraft, drones, and ground crews are all operating in silos — disconnected, delayed, incomplete. That’s not good enough. This next investment changes that. One picture, every asset, every hotspot, in real time. We know what’s possible when crews have the right intelligence. Now we’re going to make sure that’s the standard, not the exception.”
