Skyrenu Technologies is a Québec-based climate tech company developing innovative solid-sorbent Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems designed to dramatically lower the cost and energy use of carbon removal. Skyrenu’s patented modular, reactor-less moving design makes DAC scalable and commercially viable, earning recognition as a winner of an XPRIZE Carbon Removal milestone award and as a Top 20 finalist for the global grand prize.

The Problem

Direct Air Capture (DAC) is essential for keeping global warming below 2 °C—yet current systems remain prohibitively expensive, costing at least US $600 per tonne of CO₂ removed. For DAC to be climate-relevant, costs must fall below $200 per tonne, unlocking the potential for large-scale deployment.

Canada—and particularly British Columbia—is well positioned to lead. With abundant renewable energy, world-class geological storage capacity, technology incentives, and supportive government policies, the region offers an ideal environment for DAC innovation and deployment. However, it is only by bringing costs down and utilizing captured carbon in a scalable, climate-friendly way that we can turn this potential into prosperity.

The Solution

Pioneering a reactor-less, modular DAC system, tested across Canadian climates, to turn captured CO₂ into carbon-negative concrete.

Skyrenu’s is responding to the DAC cost challenge by developing a highly efficient, easily deployable DAC system which cuts energy use by 40% and reduces sorbent requirements by 30% compared to conventional designs, making carbon removal cost-effective and scalable.

With NorthX’s support, Skyrenu is proceeding with the design, fabrication, commissioning, and two-year operation of a 125 tCO₂/year Bellevue Class Direct Air Capture (DAC) unit. The Skyrenu Bellevue unit incorporates advanced solid-sorbent structured filters into a reactor-less, moving cell design, leveraging proven technology to deliver a powerful, scalable, and environmentally responsible solution. Additionally, captured CO₂ will be supplied to Skyrenu’s partner, Quebec-based CarbiCrete for carbon-negative concrete production, linking capture and utilization into a single demonstration and enabling the sale of up to 30 high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.

Operating in both Québec and British Columbia, Project Bellevue brings together Canadian climate innovators and validates DAC performance across diverse climates—pushing Skyrenu’s DAC system closer to commercial viability.

“As we proceed with the demonstration of our Bellevue Class DAC design thanks to NorthX’s generous support, we’re proving the commercial readiness of our patented moving cell, reactor-less system—all while showing that Canada has everything needed to build a world-class carbon removal industry. We’re thrilled to demonstrate Canadian innovation and produce CDR credits in collaboration with Canadian clean tech leaders such as CarbiCrete.”
