Firms receive support for saltwater batteries, bidirectional EV systems and fast-charging technologies.

Two B.C.-based firms and an Alberta-based startup have received a total of $1.6 million in investment for their innovative energy storage solutions.

NorthX Climate Tech, a Vancouver-based non-profit that supports climate hard-tech development, announced the recipients this week in partnership with BC Hydro.

One of the recipients is Richmond-based Foreseeson Technology Inc., which integrates fast DC power with responsive energy storage in electric vehicle charging, to make the process “as fast and convenient as filling up a gas tank, without requiring costly grid upgrades,” according to NorthX.

Vancouver-based FUTURi Power Inc. also received funding. The company transforms EVs and stationary batteries into smart, grid-supporting assets through an integrated, bidirectional energy system that allows electricity to flow both ways between the grid and end users.

“Today’s announcement…is about accelerating solutions that will shape British Columbia’s clean energy future,” said Sarah Goodman, president and CEO of NorthX, in a Wednesday statement.

“By backing companies that can deliver real, scalable energy storage solutions, we can ensure our electricity system remains affordable, reliable and resilient as demand grows and the grid evolves.”

Edmonton-based Aqua-Cell Energy Inc. was the third recipient. The company develops saltwater flow batteries designed for long-duration energy storage — without the use of critical minerals. The company is currently piloting its technology in Victoria, according to NorthX.

To date, NorthX has invested $41.2 million across 68 projects, which the organization said are projected to create more than 850 skilled jobs over the next two years and propel more than $425 million in follow-on investment.
