Starting today, we are NorthX Climate Tech
When the BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy launched in 2021, our purpose was clear: fast-track clean‑energy breakthroughs to drive decarbonization, at home and abroad.
We focused on four areas: batteries and energy storage, low carbon hydrogen, low carbon fuels, and carbon management. In just a few years, with support from the Government of BC, the Government of Canada, and Shell Canada, we’ve backed 65 emissions-cutting projects and helped create over 800 jobs.
But breakthroughs don’t always fit neatly into categories. And bold ideas often stall because no one wants to go first—or stay to help them scale. We’re here to change that.
So we’re evolving, broadening our focus to back the best climate hard tech innovations, period. That means getting behind strong solutions early and doubling down as they scale. And as our impact grows, we need a name that reflects our ambition.
Why NorthX?
North is a direction. A signal to lead. It stands for a Canada that builds—not just for itself, but for the world. A country that creates world-changing companies and exports the climate solutions the world needs.
X is the inflection point. It’s where potential meets opportunity. Where risk becomes resolve. Where innovation turns into industry. Quite simply, it’s where the future gets built.
NorthX isn’t just a new name. It’s a renewed commitment to back the builders tackling the toughest climate and industrial challenges. Like the “X” on a map, we focus on that pivotal moment when potential is immense, but capital is scarce, aiming to turn local strengths into global solutions.
We invest in what gets built
Ideas are great. But we invest in what gets built. We back real-world innovation you can touch, deploy, and scale.
Climate hard tech isn’t an app—it’s steel, circuits, and chemistry. It’s infrastructure, machines, and molecules. It’s what powers industries and transforms systems. With public and private sector partners, we invest in practical, scalable solutions. We de-risk first-of-a-kind projects and accelerate commercialization. Think next-gen batteries, clean fuels, carbon removal, electrification, and industrial reinvention.
This is what moves the needle. Not just for climate but for competitiveness.
A new model for impact
To accelerate what matters, we’re also evolving how we invest. In addition to traditional non-dilutive funding, we now provide repayable, non-dilutive investment to bridge critical capital gaps. This strengthens the companies we support and allows us to recycle capital into future breakthroughs. We’re also increasing our follow-on investments, to back the builders ready to grow.
Canada can lead by building
Rooted in British Columbia, we believe climate tech isn’t just a climate solution—it’s a nation-building opportunity. A future where Canada prospers by helping the world decarbonize.
To the entrepreneurs, innovators, industry leaders, investors, and policymakers shaping this future: we’re with you. And we’re just getting started. Let’s back the bold. Let’s build what matters. Together.
NorthX. Where the future gets built.
