Flexible 400V-to-800V Bidirectional Energy System for Stability and Clean Energy Integration
Sector: Energy
Technology: Battery + Energy Storage
NorthX Backing: $800,000
Project Value: $2,700,000
Project Status: Active

FUTURi Power Inc. is an energy technology company based in Vancouver, BC. FUTURi builds flexible 400–800V bidirectional energy systems that transform EVs and stationary batteries into smart, grid-supporting assets—charging faster, operating more efficiently, and responding to utility needs in real time. FUTURi’s platform unlocks new value from electrical infrastructure and assets that already exist. Founded out of research leadership at the University of British Columbia (UBC), FUTURi is led by Dr. Martin Ordonez, a globally recognized expert in electrification and recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal (2025) for innovations that advance clean, resilient energy systems. The company is venture-backed by Two Small Fish Ventures and supported by non-dilutive funding from NRC IRAP, Mitacs, and the BC ICE Fund, with commercialization alumni programs including CDL 2024 and e@UBC.

The Problem

Canada’s electric grid is under increasing strain as the number of electric vehicles (EVs) is growing rapidly. Most of today’s infrastructure relies on simple 400V, one-way charging systems that only draw power from the grid, missing the opportunity to return power when it’s most needed. Meanwhile, over 90% of EV batteries sit unused for most of the day, despite their potential to act as flexible energy storage. With electricity demand expected to rise by 47% by 2050, utilities are facing the growing challenge of managing peak demand, ensuring stability, and integrating intermittent renewables.

The Solution

FUTURi Power offers a Canadian-built 800V bidirectional energy system that transforms EVs and stationary batteries into smart, grid-supporting assets.

FUTURi’s system enables energy to flow both ways, leading to faster charging, more efficient operations, and real-time response to grid needs. It works seamlessly with modern EV platforms and energy management systems, unlocking new value from infrastructure that already exists. As Canada moves toward 23 million EVs and Electric Trucks on the road by 2040 (NRCan), even limited participation in vehicle-to-grid and battery-to-grid programs could provide over 80 GWh of flexible storage, helping to power homes, stabilize the grid, and accelerate the shift to a clean energy future.

NorthX’s investment will enable final hardware refinement, safety certification, and a grid-connected pilot—advancing the platform to commercial readiness by 2027 and establishing manufacturing in Canada. The result: a cost-effective, Canadian-built solution that enhances grid resilience, defers costly infrastructure upgrades, and positions FUTURi as a leader in the C$5 billion North American V2G market.

“NorthX’s support is accelerating our mission to turn EVs and stationary batteries into active grid assets. This project allows us to demonstrate how 800V bidirectional systems, designed and built in Canada, can deliver real grid resilience, reduce emissions, and unlock the next generation of smart electrification. With this partnership, we’re proving that everyday energy devices can do more than consume power—they can power a cleaner, more responsive, and more sustainable energy future.”
