The Problem
The film industry largely depends on diesel generators to power its film sets. These generators produce electricity by burning diesel fuel, which is resulting in 1 ton/day in GHG emissions, and this industry accounts for hundreds of generators in the greater Vancouver area. H2 Portable’s emission-free generator project aims to prove three customer requirements needed to scale the solution: seamless operation, plug-and-play logistics, and a business case that’s comparable to diesel incumbent.
The Solution
Chilliwack-based H2 Portable Power Corp produces hydrogen fuel cell generators as a future clean technology alternative to diesel generators. With the potential to offset 400 litres of diesel per day per unit, these zero-waste portable generators come in 2-unit sizes of 50kW and 100kW. They are small and light enough to fit on a single trailer, utilizing a Loop Energy hydrogen fuel cell for reliable, equivalent power output to diesel generators. These clean power generators produce a 38% lower carbon intensity than diesel generators by using SMR natural gas – and 75% lower carbon intensity using electricity in BC.
This project funded by NorthX leverages existing technologies and processes of Loop Energy and TyCrop. The goal is to learn how to commercially manufacture and scale the H2P hydrogen generator at an affordable market price.
