Mangrove Lithium

Electrochemical lithium processing – Electrode scaling and manufacturing

The Problem

Lithium refining is a $52B market producing 1.2M tons of battery grade lithium per year. Lithium hydroxide production is critical to the battery industry, but current methods are carbon and energy-intensive resulting in harmful waste streams like hydrogen and chlorine gas, and lithium sulfate.

The Solution

Mangrove Lithium (“Mangrove”) refines lithium chloride and lithium sulfate from a diverse source of feedstocks into battery grade lithium. Using multi-compartment reactors, Mangrove’s patented electrochemical lithium refining technology works to produce battery grade lithium with zero waste products. The technology has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon intensity and energy used resulting in reduction of +60% in CO₂ emissions.

NorthX funding will help validate the electrochemical performance, develop roll-to-roll manufacturing for the process, and test the manufacturing process at scale. The goal is to develop an electrode manufacturing process in BC for Mangrove’s inaugural commercial scale 3,000 ton/year lithium hydroxide refining facility.

“This project funded by NorthX is of paramount importance to Mangrove Lithium, as it marks a key step in transitioning our innovative gas diffusion electrode (GDE) technology from the lab to real world application. Scaling up to a continuous roll-to-roll process is vital to meet the demand for electrodes in our inaugural lithium refining facility and future plants – enabling us to help meet the global demands for battery-grade lithium.”
