Moment Energy

Scaling North America’s second-life energy future
Sector: Energy
Technology: Battery + Energy Storage
NorthX Backing: $3,000,000
Project Value: $30,000,000
Project Status: Active

Moment Energy is the first and only company building commercial-scale battery energy storage from second-life EV batteries — fully certified across the UL safety stack and deployed in the field today. Their systems power data centres, hospitals, factories, and microgrids across North America, sourced from batteries already on the continent’s roads, manufactured in Texas and British Columbia. Moment Energy partners with major automakers, including Mercedes-Benz Energy, to put retired EV batteries back to work before they’re recycled.

The Problem

Commercial and industrial clients are looking for energy solutions that are more affordable, reliable, and resilient. Moment Energy’s battery energy storage systems meet this need but upfront cost can be a barrier for early customers.

The BC Hydro Energy Storage Incentive (ESI) provides meaningful support to help customers adopt battery energy storage. However, because the program reimburses costs largely after they are incurred, it leaves a financing gap for the upfront capital required to design, permit, engineer, procure, and construct these projects.

The Solution

A higher standard for commercial-scale energy storage. Repurposed by design, certified to deploy.

What the market needs is bridge financing for small businesses in the commercial and industrial sectors. Upfront working capital that allows projects to move ahead before revenues materialize. This kind of financing has long supported large-scale conventional energy projects and other capital-intensive sectors, but doesn’t yet exist for commercial battery storage.

NorthX’s $3 million investment will enable Moment Energy to deploy multiple commercial units through the BC Hydro ESI program, projected to reduce an estimated 31,600 tonnes of CO₂e annually. These storage projects can lower energy costs for BC farmers, manufacturers, and even hospitals, while helping BC Hydro defer costly utility upgrades.

Just as important, this project is designed to prove a repeatable financing model that can attract larger lenders and help scale second-life storage across British Columbia and beyond.

“BC Hydro’s Energy Storage Incentive is an ambitious program with real potential. However, what has become clear is that the missing link is project financing. Smaller, high-impact projects, whether local community initiatives or C&I facility upgrades, need upfront capital to move from interest to deployment. With NorthX, we’re removing that barrier and helping open a new era of affordable, resilient energy for commercial and industrial customers in British Columbia.”
