PermaC is a Canadian technology company developing science-based solutions to prevent greenhouse gas emissions from degrading permafrost landscapes. By combining geotechnical engineering, nature-based restoration, advanced environmental monitoring, and carbon market expertise, PermaC stabilizes rapidly thawing permafrost terrain while generating measurable climate, ecological, and community benefits.

The Problem

Permafrost stores approximately 1,500–1,700 gigatonnes of organic carbon, nearly twice the carbon currently in the atmosphere. As the Arctic warms about four times faster than the global average, thawing permafrost is releasing increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, creating positive climate feedback that accelerates global warming. Thawing leads to features like retrogressive thaw slumps (erosional disturbances that are annually growing in area) that are expanding rapidly across the Arctic, yet there is currently no focus on preventing these emissions before they occur.

The same thaw processes are also threatening northern infrastructure. Roads, airports, pipelines, buildings, and utilities constructed on frozen ground are increasingly failing as permafrost degrades, with infrastructure damage costs projected to rise dramatically over the coming decades.

PermaC addresses both challenges through science-based, nature-driven stabilization technologies that reduce permafrost degradation, protect critical infrastructure, and quantify prevented greenhouse gas emissions. By integrating engineering, ecological restoration, and rigorous carbon measurement, PermaC is creating a scalable solution for both climate mitigation and climate adaptation.

The Solution

Commercializing the prevention of warming-induced emissions and Arctic infrastructure failure.

PermaC has developed the Green Blanket™, an integrated stabilization system that combines erosion control materials, Arctic revegetation, hydrological management, and continuous environmental monitoring to slow or halt abrupt permafrost thaw. By stabilizing rapidly expanding retrogressive thaw slumps , the Green Blanket simultaneously reduces greenhouse gas emissions, protects northern infrastructure, restores degraded ecosystems, and supports Indigenous-led land stewardship. The solution is designed to slow growth by at least 80% with impacts quantified through rigorous measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), including greenhouse gas flux measurements, remote sensing, and field monitoring to enable future high-integrity carbon credits.

NorthX’s investment will accelerate commercialization by supporting pilot deployments, technology validation, product refinement, and customer engagement with Indigenous governments, infrastructure owners, and carbon market stakeholders. The funding will enable PermaC to generate the performance data needed to validate its technology, establish a scalable business model, and position the company to enter both the growing carbon market and the rapidly expanding climate adaptation and resilient infrastructure sectors.

“The Arctic is one of the Earth’s greatest climate regulators, and it is physically changing faster than anywhere else on the planet. Preventing catastrophic permafrost degradation requires new science, new technology, and the courage to build companies around problems that many consider too difficult. NorthX is empowering women entrepreneurs while helping accelerate solutions that safeguard our shared future. ”
