Reducing carbon emissions is critical in the fight against climate change, but it is not enough to stave off its worst effects. The scientific consensus is clear: billions of tonnes of carbon already in the atmosphere must be safely and permanently removed.
Biomass in. Carbon out. Permanently.
pHathom captures CO₂ from biomass energy and other sources, dissolves it in seawater, and neutralizes it with crushed limestone in onshore reactors. The treated seawater is then returned to the ocean at a natural pH, enriched with stable bicarbonates that lock away carbon for thousands of years.
By harnessing the ocean’s natural carbon cycle, pHathom is unlockings a vast and underutilized capacity for durable carbon removal at a scale that matches the urgency of the climate challenge, without disrupting marine ecosystems.
This approach also creates significant economic opportunities for British Columbia and Canada, with its abundant biomass resources and thousands of kilometres of coastline.
With NorthX’s support, pHathom is accelerating from pilot to demonstration, validating its technology in real-world conditions. This project shows how coastal biomass emissions can become a climate solution, storing CO₂ safely as stable bicarbonate ions in the ocean for millennia while supporting sustainable forestry and clean energy. NorthX is helping pHathom move faster toward commercial scale.
