Tydra Labs is a Vancouver-based next-generation biomaterials company. Its signature product is TYDRA ONE, a vegan microfibrillated chitin ingredient which is grown, not extracted. It replaces the fossil-based and shellfish-derived ingredients used in cosmetics and beyond. 

The Problem

Most personal care and cosmetic formulations rely on synthetic, fossil-based polymers like carbomers, acrylates, and micro-capsules as rheology modifiers, thickeners, and texturizers. Under the EU’s REACH restriction on intentionally added microplastics (Regulation EU 2023/2055), these synthetic polymers are being phased out with upcoming sector deadlines (e.g., 2027 rinse-off, 2029 leave-on). Formulators urgently need scalable replacements.  

Current natural alternatives, namely chitin and chitosan extracted from crustacean shells, suffer from severe constraints: they are non-vegan, highly allergenic, marine-dependent, chemically intensive to extract, and subject to volatile seasonal supply chains. Beyond cosmetics, this same reliance on fossil-derived polymers and synthetic texturizers extends into a broader $15B+ global market across food, agricultural coatings, and biomedical biomaterials.  

Globally, synthetic polymers manufacturing accounts for over 10% of CO2e world-wide, while marine chitin extraction degrades coastal ecosystems. The beauty industry alone represents a $2.5B+ cosmetic rheology modifier market, but formulators lack a natural, high-performance, allergen-free replacement that can scale reliably without a premium carbon or environmental footprint. 

The Solution

Replacing microplastics in consumer goods with waste-derived biopolymers. 

Tydra Labs solves this with TYDRA ONE, a vegan microfibrillated chitin biomaterial produced through fungal fermentation on regional food and agricultural waste streams. Starting in cosmetics for rapid market entry and premium margins, TYDRA ONE matches or outperforms synthetic carbomers without fossil inputs, shellfish allergens, or land/marine disruption. Its proprietary process retains a hydrated, fibrillated structure that delivers superior texturizing and stabilizing performance compared to traditional dried biopolymers.  

With an initial focus on the cosmetic industry, Tydra’s fungal fermentation process is a versatile platform technology. The exact same waste-to-value process can be deployed to replace synthetic polymers and fossil-based ingredients across agriculture, food & beverage, and biomedical industries.  

NorthX’s investment will support Tydra’s BC pilot facility, accelerating the company’s scale-up toward 100 tonnes/year capacity. This investment will validate unit economics, complete ISO 14040/14044-compliant Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and establish the techno-economic framework for decentralized manufacturing.  

By diverting local organic waste from landfills, Tydra avoids methane generation while displacing fossil-based polymer synthesis, with an estimated impact of ~1,500–3,000 tCO2e/year at the 100 t/yr pilot scale and the potential to exceed 50,000 tCO2e/year as production expands across multi-industry applications. Every tonne of TYDRA ONE eliminates approximately one tonne of synthetic microplastic feedstock while upcycling up to four tonnes of regional agricultural waste into high-value functional materials.
