The Problem
The rise in wildfire intensity, fuel accumulation, and wildland-urban interface (WUI) expansion have increased the likelihood of large wildfires impacting valuable assets, forest health, and air quality. Wildfire control methods have not kept pace with these changes. To address destructive wildfires, there is an urgent need for methods to allow beneficial fires to burn where they can and prevent devasting fires from burning where they shouldn’t. Rapid improvements in wildfire management is essential.
The Solution
Revolutionizing B.C. wildfire management with a robotic system that transforms perimeter control and risk-reduction burning.
Wildfire Robotics has developed a remotely controlled, self-establishing, intelligent wildfire containment line called Firewall. This innovative system can be deployed day or night, over long distances (10km+ feasible), and in rough conditions to provide effective containment for various wildfire objectives. It solves critical challenges, such as difficult terrain, limited visibility, safety concerns, and resource availability.
This NorthX funded project will focus on the development and field pilot of their 4th iteration Firewall model, named Diamondback, which promises to transform wildfire management with its advanced capabilities. Wildfire Robotics has partnered with First Nation Emergency Services Society (FNESS) to conduct two risk reduction burns to develop further knowledge on its application for enhanced perimeter control and risk reduction burning.
